A story of music teaching from the heart of a musician and educator
A BITÂ ABOUT ME
SOME OFÂ
MY STORY
Music has always been a part of my life. Piano study for me began at age five, when I begged my parents for lessons. Singing in choirs has always been a passion, beginning with nursery school church choir and spanning through elementary to junior and senior high. Throughout K-12, I loved participating in summer musicals, recording children's music albums, and playing in solo and chamber music performances. After completing major coursework in two years for a communication degree in college, I decided that the call of music was too strong and I needed to double major. Upon graduation, the Lord handed me a part-time position as a piano teacher at a Christian school—teaching forty kids each week—and I have been teaching music ever since! Seeing the Lord's guidance in my life toward music, and how He has allowed me to use it for His glory, is one of my greatest joys.

A natural continuation of my love for music teaching has been to return to graduate studies. I began with a Master’s in Music Education, with an emphasis in Piano Pedagogy, which allowed me to build my skills as an individual piano teacher. Soon after graduation, a colleague and I were privileged to bring the program in Piano Pedagogy to The Master’s University. Now, over a decade later, I have returned to school again for additional studies to further deepen and broaden my understanding of teaching and learning music through a doctoral degree at USC. We can never stop learning on this journey of making music!
A BRIEF PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC
Two organizing ideas provide shape and direction to my understanding of music—of why it exists and why we as humans are so compelled by it. Firstly, I believe music is a gift that has been given to us all, and we have the amazing privilege of giving that gift to one another. Secondly, I also believe music is a part of the narrative of our lives. Each of us has a story that we are living, and music is woven into that story for every one of us. Music is a compelling way that our Creator-God is revealed and reflected on this earth. What joy can be found in praising Him through music in our lives! It is my desire with each of my students to cultivate a deep musical knowledge, so that as they follow their own journey through life, they carry with them this beautiful gift.
